WoW Guild - So you wanna be a GM?

Welcome to the first part of the WoW Guild series. In this series of articles I am going to discuss the various parts of forming and running a raiding guild in Blizzards World of Warcraft.

Everyone understands the nature of the game is social. It's about who you run with, how good they are, what you have achieved and surrounding yourself with like minded people who you can build up friendships with. It's no surprise then to realise that there are hundreds of thousands of WoW Guilds. There are a few very successful guilds that get the public spotlight for world, region and some server firsts but most of the guilds you never hear about. They are either off the radar, don't achieve much or are happy plodding along in their own little way. One thing these guilds have in common is apparent every step of the way. Good or bad leadership can make or break success.

So your thinking about starting a new guild, the first thing that a lot of people tend to want to do is to think of some fabulous all encompassing name that makes them sound really cool. Something either serious or funny but they spend far too much time focusing on the name of the guild and not its objectives, structure and foundations.

WoW Guild - What do I want this guild to be?

Only fools rush in, answer these questions first.

Don't rush in, think about what you want from your new guild and how much time do you have to give to it out of RL. Be honest with yourself and make sure you know what your taking on. Running a guild is almost like a small part time job only you don't get paid (at least most don't!). So have a think about these questions, what you answer to these will depend on the kind of direction you would be best taking.

What type of guild will it primarily be? Raiding, social or hardcore.
What type of people do you want in it? Think personality.
How much time can you devote to running it? Think how many raids and how much Admin time.
What resources do you already have? Website/forums, raiders, officers, guild bank, gold for the fee's.
What will your recruitment restrictions be? Think age, language and timezone.

WoW Guild - Producing the guild overview.

Once you have answered those questions your ready to put together your guild overview. It's nothing fancy but a short paragraph summing up the answers to the questions we asked in the previous paragraph. If this was me, although I'm not the GM (that's my RL brother) I help to make some of the decisions and this template can be used by all officers.

WoW Guild - Sect of Obsidian - overview example

Sect of Obisidian on The Venture Co. Europe server is a World of Warcraft raiding guild. We have mature responsible people who enjoy playing together to complete end game raiding content. Most of our members are what we affectionately consider "older" due to our raiding times and the nature of our guild chat. We have raids going on three to four times a week and encourage our members to attend at least two raids. We do not have mandatory raids at this time but those who do not actively participate on a regular basis are unlikely to get spots very often.

We have our forums which are only available to access by our guild members, three guild tabs and a decent stock of items. We currently have six full officers, two raid leaders but all officers are able to lead adhoc raids when the need arises.

We are currently recruiting for our second ICC 10 team and ICC 25 Progression. Over 18's preferred, must have understanding of the English language (we don't care if its not your first language as long as you can understand on vent!) and be able to raid 20:30 – 00:30 server time.

There, pretty straight forward and maybe people are asking if it's really needed, the answer is yes. Look how many questions that simple paragraph has already answered. Remember, this is the FIRST step in setting up your new guild and your role as a GM. Strong guilds require strong leadership, strong leaders require definite direction. Be organised, know what you want before you set out to get it.

This guild overview will be reviewed regularly, things change, guilds adapt, so do we as Raid Leaders, Officers and so should the GM.

The next part covers the next step, Guild WoW - Deciding on a guild structure.

Thanks for reading, bookmark us and come back to check often or join us and come chat in our forums!

Toravon the Ice Watcher Tactics and Strategy

Toravon the Ice Watcher is the final boss in VoA. Considered to be the toughest but yielding the best rewards. This fight is all about properly timed tank switches, raid movement to avoid AoE damage from the Orbs and dispels to remove the snare left by his frost nova. Periods of high damage will occur from "Whiteout" where all frost damage is increased. Read on for full tactics and abilites and our Toravon the Ice Watcher Strategy. His release is timed for February 2nd at the same time Frostwing Halls is released in Icecrown Citadel and Arena season 8 starts.

Toravon Abilities

Frozen Mallet - Attacks have a chance to apply Frostbite!

Frostbite - inflicts 1950-2050 damage every 2 seconds for 20 seconds. Frozen Orb - Summons a Frozen Orb, inflicting 2925-3075 damage every second to everyone within 8 yards.

Whiteout - Increases frost damage taken by 25%, and stacks. Soft enrage mechanic.

Freezing Ground - Immobilizes everyone around the target for 4-5 seconds. Appears around Toravon and where his orb adds spawn.

Toravon Strategy

MT pulls boss and tanks him in a corner. Off tank needs to be ready for tank switch when the MT gets too many stacks for the healers to manage, how many that will be will depend on your MT's maximum HP and your healers ability. Set your sights on 3-4 to start with.

Around 30 second intervals he will summon Frozen Orbs (1 in 10 man and 3 in 25 man), these will float around randomly doing frost damage to anyone they come into range with. RANGED DPS MUST NUKE THEM ASAP.

Approximately every 45 seconds he'll cast "Whiteout" on the raid. This will increase frost damage taken by all raid members and will espcially have an effect on the tanks. Frostbite damage will be increased with not only it's own stacks but also with "Whiteout" stacks making this a soft enrage mechanic and a DPS RACE!

Freezing Ground is a Frost Nova rooting spell, watch the ground to see when it will appear, make sure to be out the way and if needed it can be cleansed from anyone stuck

Massive nuke on the boss, claim your T10 Legs or Gloves and any Season 8 PvP gear that drops, and dont forget your Frosts!

Good Luck!

Raid Leader Addons: Raid Buff Status

Over the next few weeks I will be detailing what addons I recommend for Raid Leaders. I've tried and tested loads and am constantly looking for new releases and updates. A great place to read up on addons in general is http://www.nostockui.com a place that I recommend to any WoW player of any class.

Raid Buff Status is one of the addons that I consider to be one of my "Core" simply because it's ease of use, setup and the amount of buffs that people "forget" or seem to miss for whatever reason.

Raid Buff Status works right out of the box extremely well, but if you want to maximise it's potential and really integrate it into your raiding practice then there are a few options you will want to configure. Those such as where to announce warnings and what "extra" announcements to make. These extra announcements include a warning when a raid member puts down a refreshment table, soulwell and buff foods such as fish feasts. Not only will it announce these facilities are available it will also announce when they are about to expire and even name a raid member who might be missing a food buff before it disapears!

rbs381Raid Buff Status uses what it calls the "Dashboard" to give you easy access to a massive amount of information in decently sized space.

Starting at the top you can easily Identify what the icons show as they are using the same buff icon as you would expect, however if your not sure hover over the icon with your cursor and find the tooltip pop up.

RBS shows you which buffs are missing by displaying a buff icon with a number inside, this number indicates the number of raid members who are missing the buff. In most cases you can hover over the buff icon and see an actual list of who is missing that buff and who can cast it.

Raid Buff Status is Highly Intelligent, so far i've never had it fail to recognise the classes and specs within my raid team and configure itself to track the necessary buffs.

One of the area's that you'll want to configure is the ability to track raid members health, mana and survival status. This is crucial, but taking it one step further RBS allows you to break that down into healers, tanks and DPS giving you a quick overview of the raid situaion at a glance. Not only that but it can also be configured to send a warning message on tank or healer death so you can take appropriate action as a raid leader and redirect other resources to avoid a wipe.

There are three easy access buttons on the botton of the RBS Dashboard"these are used to announce the status of the raid buffs to whatever channel you have configured. You can easily see what buffs are configured to be announced for the boss or trash buttons by using the dropdown arrows you can see at the top of the Dashboard. That area of configuration can also be used to decide if those buffs will be displayed on the dashboard and if they have an announce warning associated with them.

RBSOptions

The other button thats included at the bottom of the dashboard is an "R" and will initiate a readycheck for the raid.

One of the excellent features of this addon is that once the fighting starts the addon goes into "battle" mode and the only information that is displayed is that relating to party health and the status of soulstones. This is massively helpful in saving valueable screen real estate when your not only leading but playing at the same time.

To Download this Fantastic addon for Raid Leaders go HERE --> http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/raidbuffstatus.aspx

Maybe you should check out its Twitter as well, it's certainly deserving of a lot more followers so lets get the news out there. RBS beats all the other Buffing addons out there in my opinion and is far superior to Big Brother and XRS.

Good luck with your raiding fellow leaders, I hope this makes your role a touch easier.

Raid Leader Rant: But I don’t want to get saved to help!

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I posted my last RLR, why? Well mainly because folks have been pretty good up till xmas, then xmas, and now the raids have gathered momentum a bit more and low and behold, the grumpy ole Cybac is back in town. So what’s the grumpy RL moaning about this time? People who complain or refuse to get saved to an already started GUILD raid. Now let me get the details clear, I’m not asking people to join a pug and get saved, it’s a GUILD run, I’m not asking because I want to, I’m asking because I need the help, because the team and ultimately the GUILD needs the help. Why am I putting GUILD in capitals all the time? Simply to make the point that the needs of the many (GUILD!) outweigh the needs of the one. If killing one more progression boss puts us 4-5 spots higher on our servers faction ranks then I really do expect people to make ALL the resources they have in the guild available for use.

Incoming rant so if you have delicate sensibilities stop reading and go back to your dolls…..

Raid Leader: ICC 10 Man Quick Tactics

Hey again folks,

I hate long and complicated explanations of tactics, proper strategy guides have their place, don’t get me wrong I think they are wonderful tools and thoroughly recommend them, but slap bang in the middle of a raid your looking for a short version with the critical information in it, not the full kit and caboodle.

I’ve put together a ICC Quick Tactics guide for Raid Leaders. This is aimed at the 10 man primarily but can easily be updated to include 25 on request. I hope it helps someone else apart from me, but if not then at least it’s been a help to me and my team. /grin
